Evaluation Question 3

20th Century Fox

  • After filming our thriller and with further lessons on the top ten successful film institutions I have re thought the process of which institution I would use for the production, marketing, exhibition, Pre -production and distribution process for our thriller. I originally looked at new line cinema institution, which is successful but it also belongs to a conglomerate institution, this being warner brothers. Although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing it does mean that it is not as well known as bigger companies and institutions such as Columbia pictures, paramount, Disney or dream works. With this in mind I feel that 2oth century fox would better establish our thriller as they are a bigger and more powerful institution that it more successful, with the well known representations of the films; Mr and Mrs Smith, Ice age: the meltdown and Hitman.

Most of their successful films accompany the same genre, this being action or thrillers meaning that they know how to carry out the process of all of the four aspects before the film and when the films is being released, meaning that they know how to grasp a large audience globally, as they are a big company that have many connections within other companies and they have the money to spend on global advertisement and the special effects that our film will need. This also indicates that they have a bigger target audience, which are usually men of any age. They have high budget directors and actors, which will bring in a bigger and more of a range when dealing with a target audience. As you can see with the image below they have many films that have done well amongst and audience ad have made a ridiculous amount of profit compared to their original budget.

Marketing

When the film company deals with marketing the films they use traditional media such as; print, radio and film, which deals with posters and interviewing on the radio which is a positive thing as they can advertise their latest film like avatar at a cinema screening of their film star wars iii to make a profit from the purchase of the tickets as well as raising awareness for their next upcoming film. The positives with this is that the audience don’t have much of a say on whether they watch the trailers and it targets the same audience that enjoy the same genre as they both fall into similar genres and ratings of a 12 and fall within fantasy or Sci fi. This is a more expensive process, which they have the money for. They also use new media such as the Internet to advertise their films worldwide and attract a bigger audience as everyone uses the Internet. By advertising on social media websites such as Facebook and twitter it allows the audience to share this with others and it becomes more interactive and visible for them to see. For example when they advertised avatar the first thing they did was advertise pictures in empire magazine and then they and they spent more money on an extended format on 3D IMAX meaning that they are able to gain an even bigger profit from 3D cinemas for the exhibition process of film. Because they are a large conglomerate they have vast connections with other companies such as ‘Fox Connect’ they are also associated with ‘the drum’ which allows them to market through different social network sites like twitter and Facebook.
