Evaluation Question 1 - continued

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? The comparison of opening sequences.

For the comparison between title and opening sequences I thought gone girl had similarities and differences from our Blanched.
When referring to mise-en-scene and the props used in gone girl they also introduced alcohol and the idea of a bar as a reoccurring location that the man finds peace in, showing again that alcohol means the same thing to both of these male characters, that alcohol is their way of dealing with their personal struggles in the narrative.

In gone girl they use similar props of alcohol but and the lighting is similar to ours in this scene as it is representing the time of day, this being morning to show contradict and subvert the innocent connotations of white lighting in juxtaposing the alcohol, which has negative connotations. This is done to show the issues the main character is already facing within the first 2 minutes of the opening sequence as this clearly shows his issues with alcohol and personal issues, as he is drinking in the morning.

The characters of the film is similar as both of the thrillers show the class and status and differences between the female characters and the male characters. Both of the male characters both represented as the 'bad guys' within the plot of the film. However our thriller begins with this not yet being revealed until the end of the opening sequence, where as Ben Affleck, playing the male lead role is represented in a negative way at the beginning of the opening sequence as he talks about 'cracking his wife's skull' with the use of dialogue sound effects but within the film he is perceived in positive way as he is blissfully unaware of his wife's dissapearence and appears to be worried about it when he finds out, showing that he is not the 'villain' or cause of this issue, showing him as a positive character. Where as the female character in gone girl is represented as the victim as the whole film is based around her disappearance, representing her in similar ways to our female character. However our female character is shown as being the victim right until the very end when she is killed but this is not the case for gone girl as their female character is revealed to be the dominating and derivative character of the film, as it was all her idea from the very beginning.
The only other technical points to cover are the difference in fonts in both of the opening title sequences, as this can show and presume a lot about the genre of the film in its very first minutes.
As already stated previously in evaluation 1, we used a contemporary type face to make our font stand out at the same time as being simple and easy to read. This is similarly done in gone girl, only with a different font, as they used futura heavy which gives a more substantial spacing between the letters to show the clearness and 'easy to read' title, as this juxtaposes the heavy weighted and complex change in the narrative of the film.
