Genre difference, repetition and similarity

Thriller films

The thriller genre can be different from most other genres because on the surface many of them look entirely different from each other. Some thriller films can even be very different from each other even though they still share the same genre. Some examples of these thriller films are:

Gone: Starring Amanda Seyfried as the main character who struggles to hunt down a person who has taken her sister and who had once previously taken her. This film is close to another genre, horror, as it includes violence and some key scary specifics that involve a lot of tension. This film is about mystery and the scary unknown of a villain that could be a killer or worse. The use of mise en scene in this film is drastically different. The lighting is dark and mysterious to allow the audience member to be put in the position of the main character. The main character of this film is a girl seeking revenge and to find her sister, where as in inception the main character is a man, this isn't really to do with thrillers as it is more about preference for the people in charge of the film. The narrative events in this film are more negative and more dangerous for the main character to conquer this meaning that the audience feel sympathy for them more.

Inception: Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as one of the main characters of the film in which he plays a professional thief who commits corporate espionage by getting into the subconscious of others minds, stealing their dreams or becoming apart of them. This film is more about science fiction and doesn't contain anywhere near as much tension or violence. This film is about the audience solving the plot of the film with their own interpretations, where as 'Gone' is about scaring the audience as neither the main character, or the audience members knows what is going to happen, therefore making the audience feel immune and scared. The mise en scene in this film is different from 'Gone' as they kept the lighting original as the purpose is not to scare an audience member. The props are different as this film includes a lot of futuristic devices that have not yet been invented, this is for the purpose of the unknown and to show the ways in which they get into others minds. Where as in 'Gone' props such as guns and knives are used as conventions to symbolise the danger and terror inflicted on to an audience member and the main character of the film. The narrative of this film is generally a lot more complicated as it leaves the audience puzzled with no correct ending or narrative events, therefore allowing the audience to make their own judgement.

However both films have basic common aspects as they both have the effect of scaring the audience member just with different aspects and techniques used within the films. For instance They both have criminal activity and fight scenes in the films with props such as guns, to emphasise the danger and build the tension.
